11plus Grammar School Mock Exams – June 2013

The Learning Hub June Mock Exams went very well with the children feeling more positive after the important review. Many children realised the benefit of doing them and appreciated the scale of the task they face.

The exams were based on the CEM style papers as now given by most grammar schools and comprised of three intensive papers – Maths, English and Verbal Reasoning. Each paper was 1 hour long and the intensity helped the children prepare for the actual day.

It was great to hear children telling their parents that they wished to come back for the July Mock Exams as they were learning much from the experience and from the review.

At The Learning Hub, we encourage children to experience our unique and highly respected Mock Exams as they cover all of the core topics. We also have to remembering that in some areas only one in ten grammar school applications are successful and therefore thousands children, securing a sought-after grammar school place rests on passing.

With our simulated Grammar School exams the children experience conditions required to help them in their preparation like; becoming very uncomfortable with the prospect of sitting an examination in a room filled with strangers. At The Learning Hub we have organised five Mock Exams – March 2014, June 2014, July 204, August 2014 and September 2014. All the papers are one hour long and comprise of Maths, English & Verbal Reasoning. We do this as we strongly feel that by sitting a number of Mock Exams, children are able to become familiar with the examination setting reducing any worry and distress. This then allows them to perform at their best September.

With The Learning Hub, your child will be tested against other children and a report provided showing your child’s score, percentage, standardised score and placement out of the Mock Exam group. This will allow you to judge accurately how well their preparation is coming on and what is required to be done. It has been proven that Mock Exams can provide an extremely accurate indication of the final exam positioning and multiple Mock Exams over time will allow a parent to track their child’s progress. This is a fantastic form of practice and excellent value.

11plus Appeals – Grammar & Independent Schools Guideline

This time of the year, parents become desperate and emotional as they find their child has not been awarded a place in the school of their choice in the 11plus selective schools exams. Every year there is a proportion of very able children who due to extenuating circumstances marginally fail to perform to the best of their abilities or strangely enough a very small group of children who do qualify for entry, but really are interested in a different school which is oversubscribed.

in this situation, parents for varying different may consider an lodging an Appeal. A very daunting task, especially at a time when one is emotional about the outcome and perhaps conscious of those that have succeeded among the child’s peer group at school or in friend circles.

The 2012 Appeals Code states that admission authorities must allow appellants at least 20 school days from the date of notification that their application was unsuccessful to prepare and lodge their written appeal.

When preparing the Appeal form, the parents is advised to very closely look at the Grounds of Appeal. For this is the area where most will fail. It is important that the issue(s) are addressed and then stick to it, backing it up with very clear and concise evidence.

Reasons could be:

o Over subscription?
o Non-qualification?
o Maladministration (i.e. did the admission authority make a mistake in the admissions
process and deprive a child that they would otherwise have been entitled)?
o Score Admission Criteria – not reached a score high enough to gain a place?

On whatever grounds you are appealing, you will want to try and compile supporting evidence and present your case coherently in the time allocated.

This whole process can be extremely stressful and is recommended that whatever the reason chosen that the Appeal is filled in properly and emotions kept locked up or out of the way or focus will be lost.

The Appeal form itself is simple but the evidence prepared to enable the panel understand your ground for appeal is crucially important. The panel are operating under pressure as the child did not qualify in the initial round(s) and if everything was proper than your child did not qualify. It is upto the parent to provide conclusive evidence that in their child’s case that things were not proper. The evidence can be in many forms: Hospital and GP records; School report from Headteacher; Distance from School; Flaw in the administration process, etc.

This must be documented clearly and then presented in structured manner so that the child’s reason for appeal is made clear and presented clearly. Some parents hire solicitors who specialise in this but there is no conclusive evidence if this is helpful.

Disclaimer: the information and advice given here is only a guideline and represent only the authors’ view. We acknowledge others might think differently, and parents must undertake their own checks, seeking legal or other independent help where necessary, and satisfy themselves before acting on any such information and advice. Appeal arrangements should be similar throughout the country, but parents must check carefully for any local variations. All procedures should comply with the law and the Department for Education (DfE) Code of Practice on Appeals.

11+ Mock Exams for Grammar and Independent Schools (London & Home Counties)

This is a reminder that The Learning Hub is now taking bookings for its renowned 11plus Mock Exams and places are filling up very fast. Our experience of previous years have shown that many parents in the past have felt that their child had missed out on these crucial exams as places are allocated on a first come first served basis.

As Grammar and Independent Schools places have become very limited due to the large demand these exams generate the 11plus Mock Exams are now a crucial part of the 11plus preparation and designed to broaden the experience for the child as it is targeted towards them having a more structured and logically approach.

Remember that in some areas there are 12 students competing for every place and as demand for grammar school places soars this situation will only get worse.

By sitting our 11plus Mock Exam in April and June, you will be able to understand your child’s strengths and weaknesses and where to best focus their revision in the coming months. Our statistics prove that students who sit 11plus Mock Exams will ‘on average’ see their Exam scores increase by 15 – 20% at their next exam sitting. This can be the difference between you succeeding at your first choice school and not scoring enough marks to gain a grammar school place.

The 11plus exams are designed to be realistic and will last for approximately 3.5 hours in total with breaks and the subjects covered will be:

Verbal Reasoning
Mathematics
English

These Mock exams are also an important feedback indicator to parents on what is required for their child to be successful in the final ones. With FULL review of the papers given to the students the following week and papers given to students to take home.

11+ Mock Exams Results – Grammar & Independent Schools – Henrietta Barnet, QE Boys & Bucks

August 12 – 11+ Mock Test Results

The August 2012 mock tests went down well with the children enjoying and appreciating the whole experience. Confidence is now rocketing sky high with the children seeing the fruits of their hard work and the benefits in their improvements.

Our congratulation goes to all the students who took part for their enthusiasm and dedication. It was great to see them all mentally focussed and working hard during the exams.

Overall, we found all the children had improved since the July Mock Test by many Reasoning Quotient points but a special mention goes to the following students whose improvement was on average greater than 22 Reasoning Quotient Points:

Amrita Arneja, Aza Ismail, Abhay Bhakta, Dhruti Vijay, Farhia Rashid, Het Patel, Jennifer Jaison, Mitul Shah, Mishaliy Radhakrishnan, Nidhi Ladhani, Riya Kulkarni, Saad Khurshid, Shria Morjania, Yagnesh Patel and Yogesh Patel.

The top 5 individuals:

1st Position – Farhia Rashid                                 Average Score: 389

2nd Position – Lauren Mshiu                               Average Score: 382

3rd Position – Saad Khurshid                              Average Score: 373

4rd Position – Payal Shah                                      Average Score: 369

5th Position – Humzah Hameed                          Average Score: 368

Can these students please report to Mr Joshi office to collect their special prize!

The target for the children should be to gain 390 out of the possible 420 points in order to be certain in securing a place in a grammar school. The good news is that the marks are moving clearly upwards and many children have found the Summer Workshops beneficial. In the follow-up review, the children did realise their marks should have been higher were it not for all the silly mistakes and unanimously requested another Mock Exam in September. Probably due to the fact the experience is found to be highly beneficial in boosting their confidence and in reducing their exam nerves.

In response to this, we have therefore created a Special 11+ Mock Exams for Monday 3rd September 2012 in time to ensure they get some good solid experience prior to the actual 11+ Exams in September. The Mock Exams will be held at The Learning Hub at 5:00pm and parents are encouraged to register their child as soon as possible.

For further details please telephone 020 8908 0123.

IMPORTANT: We request that you kindly do not make copies of the Mock Test papers and pass them to other people as they will be used again in next year’s mock tests. Having these papers in circulation will ruin the opportunity for next year’s students to sit a paper they have never seen before in Exam Condition. Due to this risk, we are always tempted to withhold these papers, but we genuinely feel that things like returning them to parents help make The Learning Hub a centre of Excellence. The returning of the papers also allows parents to go through with their child and discover areas that require the most practice.

11+ Mock Results – July 12 (London)

July 12 – 11+ Mock Exams Results

The July 2012 mock exams went well with the children participating being more relaxed and confident in their approach. The feedback from the children is that the reviews held afterwards have been of great help and overall they are now feeling more and more confident of the actual 11+ exams in September.

I would like to congratulate all the children who took these 11+ exams for their enthusiasm and hard work and, confirming to parents and child, the commitment required for success.

My special congratulations go to the following top 5 individuals:

          1st Position   –        Farhia Rashid

          2nd Position  –        Humzah Hameed

          3rd Position  –        Lauren Mshiu

          4th Position  –        Payal Shah

          5th Position  –        Ankit Seghal

(All the scores were standardised)

As mentioned previously, the June paper was tricky, to balance the level of learning experience, the July paper was made tougher by questions being more challenging and aimed at Henrietta Barnet Girls and Queen Elizabeth’s Boys School. It is here that we should be proud of our children for they very coped well, showing that hard work does bring its rewards.

Focus and concentration was high throughout the 3 hours and it was noticed that the children were more positive to the 11+ exams and achieving success.

I personally belief that all the children who will be attending our 4 weeks of 11+ Summer Workshops will benefit tremendously by given access to some of the best 11+ material. The classes will comprise of 3 hours of solid work every day and then about 3 hours of homework. That’s an incredible 6 hours of 11+ work every day!

In the meantime, I urge all the children to work hard and parents please support your children for the competition is very strong this year.

The Next & FINAL 11+ Mock Exam will be on Saturday 11th August. Its review will be on Sat.18th August. For further details please enquire now on 020 8908 0123.

IMPORTANT: We request that you kindly do not make copies of the Mock Exam papers and pass them to other people as they will be used again. Having these papers in circulation will ruin the opportunity for next year’s students to sit a paper they have never seen before in Exam Condition. Due to this risk, we are always tempted to withhold these papers, but we genuinely feel that things like returning them to parents help make The Learning Hub a Centre of Learning Excellence. The returning of the papers also allows parents to go through with their child and discover areas that require most practice.
