How to get your child running back to school!

The summer is now coming to an end for both parents and children. Starting a new school year is a time of new beginnings and a chance to overcome any old habits that may be holding children back. This time of year is often hectic as children must leave behind the freedom of their holidays to enter a more structured system of education. Some children are eager to start back at school, whilst others struggle or lack motivation to re-enter an academic setting. One of the most common factors in a child’s struggle may be that they find the material too easy or too difficult. They may need some academic help but instead of explaining this to their parents they are more likely to act out.

They might complain about the teacher, act out in class, or talk about how the material is boring. If they miss class, show up late or even complain about a tummy ache or feeling unwell to get a sick note this is often a signal that they are struggling in some way. Often parents think that their child is not paying attention but it happens more when they feel disengaged with a subject.

Is there anything a parent can do to help?

One way to help boost a child’s confidence can be to engage them in extra tuition classes. The change of setting, pace and approach often helps children to find their feet. In a smaller group, with detailed explanations and the chance to ask whatever questions they want; many children thrive.

Over the past 15 years we at the Learning Hub have helped more than 2000 children succeed in the 11+ exams. An 11+ specialist tuition centre we ensure that academic goals are realised. Student feedback from our 2018 summer workshops:

“My confidence and self-esteem has been boosted like a rocket” – Ritvika, Aged 11

“I have been taught about time management, reasoning techniques and strategies for Verbal and Non-verbal reasoning. I will recommend this to all my friends!” – Marcus, Aged 10

“My teacher was helpful and supportive, explaining the things I didn’t understand so that I improved my marks in the next class” – Safa, Aged 9

Theresa May and the Revival of the Grammar School: What does it mean for your child?

Recently May’s government announced plans to give £50m to existing grammar schools to increase the number of places for students applying for those in demand places. But what does this mean for a parent planning and preparing their child for the 11 plus entrance exams?

The schools will continue to be as selective as before with a boost in resources if their bids for funding are accepted this September. In fact children will still need to meet the schools standard entry requirements with some schools offering the extra places to children who live out of the area. At a time when such selection criteria is vital the government explains this plan is to increase access for disadvantaged pupils and for these schools to work with local schools to improve outcomes for all pupils and give more families access to a good school place.

Studies show that children with an advantage such as extra tuition often out perform those who sit the exams without the preparation. This can give a child the edge over those others in the competition for the few places each school allocates.

My child is really bright; surely we don’t need to bother with tuition.

Tuition is not simply about learning, it is about overcoming challenges with the support of qualified teachers. It allows students to develop the confidence to realise when they don’t understand a question and learn tools to overcome this issue. Equally the subjective nature of English means often there is no wrong answer; it is more a question of making a good argument. A lesson a week for 12 weeks can help students go up a grade – if they are paying attention. In some ways tutoring is really well supervised revision with a confidence boost. No matter how bright all students can use help finessing their skill set.

How Tuition helps:

  1. Customised lessons tailored to students
  2. One to One teaching gives more time and attention
  3. A choice of tutors
  4. Increased confidence
  5. Help with homework and test practice
  6. More interesting materials and forms of study
  7. Flexible and convenient
  8. Saves time and effort

Compared to large classrooms, with numerous distractions a tuition session is more relaxed, allowing students to take in information, overcome their weaknesses and gain the edge over other students. No matter how bright a child is, the more opportunity for practice and the exposure to a variety of skills will help them to stand out from the crowd and excel.

11+ Mock Exams June 2018 Session

11 plus mock exam was successful this weekend. Children were extremely excited and little nervous. The fear of exams is fading away slowly and gradually with each Mock exam.  Children are getting better and more confident but still many small mistakes which can easily take away their only chance to get through.

The Learning Hub 11plus mock exams offer children a unique experience of a simulated Grammar school 11plus exam conditions and excellent for a child’s preparation. Our experience has shown that children become very uncomfortable with the prospect of sitting an exam, especially when in a room filled with strangers. This frequently result in some distress or worry on the child and many good and able children then freeze up whilst doing their 11plus exams, causing them to fail when success was theirs for the taking. By sitting a number of our high quality 11plus mock exams, children are able to become familiar of the exam-type setting, this in turn reduces their worry and stress; allowing them to engage fully.

Two sessions have finished and three more to go (June, July and August) before the actual exam in September.

As we approach the final months of the preparation for the Grammar school exams, The Learning Hub is running its hugely successful 11+ Mock Exams in Maths, English & Verbal Reasoning. Each paper is designed to stretch the child utilising our unique 11plus IQ material to maximise this experience.

The exams for various schools have now changed and the competition increased tremendously. Statistics shows that children who have had experience of taking part in good Mock exams are more:

  • Relaxed
  • Confident
  • Assertive
  • & Average 15% more in the actual paper.

Spoke to few children and parents to get some feedback. It helps them to overcome the fear of 11 plus exam by doing these exams.

Easter Workshops: Boost your child’s potential!

With children facing so many challenges at school, tuition can be that beneficial step to help them cope with unfamiliar workloads or complicated new information. The advantages of private tuition are so well known that most parents now use private tuition.  Learning Hub teachers show students new approaches and methods, as well as how to ’embrace’ any new tasks with which they are faced. Our teachers are able to provide guidance in time management, with which children can better organise their increasingly pressured life.

Our Easter workshops take place over two weeks allowing your child to build up momentum when faced with new or difficult concepts. They will learn effectively over time, practising our tips to success so that by week 2 they become almost second nature. They will benefit from the attention of the teacher as well as becoming motivated by their success throughout the course. For more information call our administration staff on 0208 908 0123.

11plus Exams and Grammar School Places – London

For people who do not know – Grammar schools are state selective secondary schools ie. they select their pupils by means of an 11plus exam taken by children at the beginning of their school year 6.

Currently, there are 163 grammar schools in England and a further 67 grammar schools in Northern Ireland from the near 3,000 state secondary’s. Wales and Scotland have no state grammar school.

The current government made a ‘u-turn’ on no more grammar schools but left the back door wide open, allowing current grammar schools with their blessings to create extra places.

In brief, in 2009 – 2010 there were 110,600 pupil places in grammar schools with an average population of 690 pupils. Last year, in 2016 – 2017, the state grammar school pupil population grew by 7,600. Based on the average given that calculates to about 11 new grammar schools have been opened or 7600 extra 11plus places being created.

Unfortunately, the increase in spaces has been in the traditional areas where grammar schools are already established and not in other areas where parents are demanding better academic education for their children.

In London, where there is a strong demand, the grammar school population is still relative static and bright children are losing out every year on gaining a place. The impact is difficult to measure but grammar schools’ being academically strong does lead to children attaining excellent GCSEs and ‘A’ levels results. The impact being that these children can then go on to gaining a place at one of the Russell Group of Universities and onto a great career. Something we all want for our children.

Personally, this is a right that all children should have and I personally recommend that everyone should be lobbying their local Member of Parliament and local Councillors to that effect. We do require more state grammar school places and children having a better chance in passing their 11plus exams, no matter what area they live in.
